Got any fun plans this summer? Or is your summer going to look much like the end of winter and all of spring this year—except more outdoors than indoors? Most of us will not be going out in public all that much, let alone somewhere fancy. So really, the only shoes your kids needs this summer are water shoes.
This is the conclusion Lifehacker’s managing editor, Joel Cunningham, came to recently after his three-year-old son spent much of his free time traipsing through muddy puddles in his sneakers, effectively ruining them. Instead of replacing them with newer, shinier sneakers, though, Joel went straight for a pair of hard-soled water shoes.
Those are the only shoes his son—and your little kids—will need this summer, and here’s why:
They are versatile
Does little Billy want to run through the sprinkler, and then ride his scooter, and then splash in some puddles, and then play tag, and then run through the sprinkler again? He can wear his water shoes for the duration of basically any outdoor activity he can dream up. And since he’s only going to want to do any given activity for mere minutes at a time, there’s no need to change back and forth from water shoes to sandals to sneakers.

They are virtually indestructible
Kids going to outgrow their water shoes before they destroy them. These things are meant to get wet and muddy. Go ahead and make it a summer challenge—who can be so active outdoors that they tear the damn things apart? (If they actually manage to, it means they’ve been really active, and we’ll count that as a win.)
They are comfortable
Water shoes fit like a glove, except on the feet. The hard soles protect their feet from the pavement and the top stretchy part moves with them and breathes. There is no uncomfortable rubbing and no annoying piece of plastic between their toes, à la flip flops.
Sure, water shoes are not going to win any fashion contests, but we’re not going for style right now; we’re going for function. Save the cute sandals and the coveted light-up sneakers for a year when we can all be around each other again. For now, water shoes are all they need.
